Guantian Junior High School was founded in 1968 to accommodate Taiwan's extension of compulsory education to nine years, with Li Zhang-tian serving as its first principal. In 1996, under principal Gu Chuan-long, the school relocated to a newly built campus after years of local campaigning for a better site. It sits close to the Guantian Water-rail (水雉) Ecological Education Park, one of Taiwan's key habitats for the water rail, a bird that nests specifically in the district's water-chestnut paddies.
官田國中創立於民國57年（1968年），因應九年國教延長而設立，首任校長為李樟田。民國85年（1996年），在校長古川隆帶領下，經過多年爭取後遷入新建校舍。學校鄰近官田水雉生態教育園區——這是台灣重要的水雉（菱角鳥）棲地之一，這種鳥類專門在官田的菱角田築巢。
