From salt-workers' school to ecological experimental school.

Guangfu Elementary began in 1948 as "七股國小中寮分教室," a branch classroom of Qigu Elementary, and was promoted to an independent school under the name "光復國小" in 1954. Located in Yancheng Village — literally "salt-flat village" — the school once filled every grade to capacity with the children of local salt workers. After commercial salt harvesting ended, enrollment fell below 30 students total. In April 2016, it was approved as one of Tainan's four public experimental schools under the Ministry of Education's sustainable-campus initiative, and reopened as "光復生態實驗小學" (Guangfu Ecological Experimental Elementary School) with an ecology-centered curriculum.

Local Culture ·

An identity built on the rise and fall of the salt trade.

🧂

Guangfu's entire identity is tied to the rise and fall of the Qigu salt industry: built to serve salt workers' children in the postwar decades, and later reinvented as an ecological experimental school that uses the surrounding salt flats and lagoons as its outdoor classroom. See the Tainan city page for more on the region.
