A rare "small school" with a long lineage.

Guangfu Elementary opened on September 1, 1899, as "Yilan Small School" (宜蘭小學校) — one of only seven "small schools" (小學校) established islandwide in the early Japanese colonial period specifically for the children of Japanese settlers, and the only one in what was then Yilan Prefecture. It was renamed Yilan County Guangfu National School in October 1950 and took its current name in September 1968. Over the decades, several of its satellite branch schools grew into fully independent schools of their own, including institutions now found in Suao, Luodong, Sanxing, and Toucheng. By the 2020–21 school year, the school had graduated 108 cohorts totaling more than 20,000 students across both the Japanese colonial and postwar eras.

🏛️

As Yilan Prefecture's only Japanese-era "small school," Guangfu's history is intertwined with the region's colonial past and its later branch schools that spread across Yilan County. See the Yilan County schools page for more on the region.
