The school grew steadily over the following years, reaching a peak of 19 classes and 750 students by 1976. It sits on Yangde Boulevard, the main road climbing up into the Yangmingshan mountain area, making it one of the higher-elevation junior high schools in Shilin District. Gezhi is a distinct and unrelated institution from the similarly-named private Gezhi Senior High School in New Taipei City's Sanchong District.
格致國中創立於民國58年（1969年）8月，創校之初僅設4班、學生211人，此後穩定成長，於民國65年（1976年）達到19班、750名學生的高峰。學校位於通往陽明山的主要幹道仰德大道，是士林區地勢較高的國中之一。格致國中與新北市三重區同名的私立格致高中為完全不同、彼此無關的獨立機構。
