Genfang Elementary School

Genfang Elementary is reputed to be the elementary school closest to Turtle Island (龜山島) anywhere in Taiwan. The place name "梗枋" is said to derive either from the wooden barrier fences early Han settlers built here, or from a Hoklo phrase describing a mountain collapse. After Typhoon Flossie's landslides in 1969, the surrounding community was renamed "更新里," but the school retained its historic name — as did the local fishing harbor, still known as Genfang Fishing Harbor (梗枋漁港). The school celebrated its 50th anniversary around 2017, suggesting a founding around 1967, though the exact date is unconfirmed.

梗枋國小相傳是全台灣距離龜山島最近的國小。地名「梗枋」相傳源自早期漢人先民搭建的木製隘寮圍籬，另一說法則來自描述山崩的閩南語詞彙。民國58年（1969年）溫妮颱風造成山崩後，當地社區改名為「更新里」，但學校仍保留歷史校名，當地漁港至今也仍稱「梗枋漁港」。學校約於2017年前後慶祝建校50週年，推估創校年約為民國56年（1967年），惟確切年份尚待查證。
