Old school, new life, amid the tea fields.

Gaoyuan Elementary began in 1915 as a branch campus of Longtanpi Public School, established to serve the Tongluokuan (銅鑼圈) area due to poor transportation access at the time. It became independent in 1920 as "銅鑼圈公學校," under first principal Nagaike Masakazu, before being renamed Gaoyuan (高原) Elementary School in 1968 — making it over a century old. The campus sits amid tea plantations, reflecting the historic Tongluokuan tea-growing area of Longtan, and includes a school history museum ("校史館") documenting its long history, plus two named buildings, "晨曦樓" (Dawn Building) and "耕心樓" (Cultivating-Heart Building). A new school building, described as "old school, new life," was completed and opened in recent years.

🍵

The school's original name, "銅鑼圈" (Tongluokuan), refers to the gong- or basin-shaped highland terrain of this part of Longtan, historically one of Taoyuan's most productive tea-growing regions — the school's tea-plantation setting is a direct link to that agricultural heritage. See the Taoyuan county page for more on the region.
