A century from education post to regularized school.

Gaoyi Elementary was founded in October 1926 as “高義蘭番童教育所” (an aboriginal-children's education station). The original building burned down in 1938 and was rebuilt the following year as “高義教育所.” The school became independently established in 1948 as “新竹縣角板鄉高義國民學校,” was renamed for Taoyuan County in 1950, and took its current elementary designation in 1968 under the nine-year compulsory education reform. Its first official principal, Liao Xi-liang (廖錫諒), took office in January 1947, and an on-campus student lunch program began in September 1980. The school completed underground utility-line reconstruction in 2000 after damage from Typhoon Bilis, and has won a “special excellence” rating in the county's self-run school lunch evaluation nearly every year since 2002. In 2011, its principal, Wang Lien-chin, won the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Principal Leadership Award — the same year the school obtained its first-ever building permit, over 60 years after being established, illustrating how informally many of these mountain campuses were originally built.
