Profile

The ruby of the southernmost tip of Taiwan.

Gaoshi Elementary School was founded in 1905, during the Japanese colonial era, as Gaoshifo Public School; it was renamed Gaoshi National School in 1961 and formally named Pingtung County Mudan Township Gaoshi Elementary School in 1968. In 2004 it merged with Mulin Elementary School as its Mulin branch campus. The school brands itself “the ruby of the southernmost tip of Taiwan” (國境之南的紅寶石) — an extremely remote, small Southern-Paiwan school on a plateau surrounded by the southern Central Mountain Range, rich in natural ecology and cultural heritage. With very small class sizes, teachers emphasize individualized instruction tailored to each child's needs. The curriculum weaves in disaster-preparedness education through the history of the Gaoshi tribal community's seven historical relocations, with students becoming guides for a “relocation history wall” exhibit, and the school promotes the “Gaoshi Grain Path” as a signature trekking and study route.
