A name that remembers the hunters who came first.

Gaoliao Elementary opened in September 1961 as a branch of Guanshan (Guanyin) Elementary and became independent on August 1, 1964, making it one of the newer, smaller schools in Yuli Township. The place name "Gaoliao" itself carries history: it derives from Amis Indigenous hunters who built hunting huts (寮, liao) in this area before Taiwan's 1945 retrocession from Japanese rule — a naming legacy that ties the modern school directly to the land's earlier Indigenous use.
