Gangxi Elementary School

Gangxi Elementary began in September 1952 as a branch of Zhongshan Elementary School, serving only grades 1 and 2 at first. The site required 17 months of hillside excavation and land-widening before campus construction could even begin. The first building was finished in July 1954, and the school opened that September under founding principal Liu Jingru; it was renamed to its current form in 1968. Enrollment peaked at 36 classes between 1976 and 1978. Classroom views today still include black kites circling and cargo ships passing through the harbor below.

港西國小於民國41年（1952年）9月以中山國小分校形式成立，初期僅招收一、二年級學生。校地興建前，須先經過17個月的開山闢地與整地工程。第一棟校舍於民國43年（1954年）7月完工，同年9月正式開學，首任校長為劉景如；民國57年（1968年）更名為現今校名。在校生人數於民國65至67年（1976至1978年）達到高峰，共36班。至今從教室望出去，仍可見黑鳶盤旋、貨輪往來於下方港灣。
