A century at the river's mouth.
Gangkou Elementary opened in 1921 under Japanese rule as "Gangkou Aboriginal Public School," and has been renamed multiple times since. In 1950 it established a branch class at Jingpu, which later became independent as its own school in 1960. Gangkou Elementary recently marked its 100th anniversary. The school sits near the mouth of the Xiuguluan River — the endpoint of Taiwan's most famous river-rafting route — and today embraces the Amis place name "Makotaay," meaning muddy or turbid water, as its site identity.

Fengbin's scenic, Amis-rooted coastline.
Gangkou village sits within Fengbin's coastal Amis Indigenous community, at the dramatic point where the Xiuguluan River meets the Pacific Ocean. The river is Taiwan's most famous whitewater rafting destination, and the village and school share deep ties to Amis fishing and river culture along this stretch of coast.
