Fuyuan Elementary School

Fuyuan Elementary was founded in 1913 under Japanese colonial rule as "新開園蕃人公學校," taking its name from Chishang's original Japanese-era place name, "新開園" (Xinkaiyuan). The school relocated to its current townsite in 1936 and grew rapidly through the mid-20th century, peaking at roughly 1,700 students across 35 classes in 1967 — a scale almost unimaginable for the school today, which has shrunk to about 10 classes as the surrounding population has declined. One of Fuyuan's former branch campuses later became independent after the war as Wan'an Elementary, now famous for holding the largest campus of any elementary school in Taiwan.

福原國小創立於日治大正2年（1913年），初名「新開園蕃人公學校」，校名源自池上的日治時期舊地名「新開園」。學校於昭和11年（1936年）遷至現今市區校址，並在二十世紀中葉快速成長，於民國56年（1967年）達到約1,700名學生、35班的高峰——這樣的規模對今日僅剩約10個班級的學校來說幾乎難以想像，反映了周邊人口的流失。福原國小的一所前分校於戰後獨立設校，即今日以擁有全台最大校地聞名的萬安國小。
