A name born of a Cold War evacuation.

Futai Elementary was established in 1965 specifically to educate the children of Nationalist Chinese troops and their dependents who had been evacuated from Phú Quốc Island (富國島), Vietnam, in 1953 under General Huang Jie, and who ultimately resettled in Zhongli. The school's name, "富台," combines characters from "富(國島)" — Phú Quốc Island — and "台(灣)" — Taiwan, directly encoding this Cold War-era history. The school marked its 60th anniversary in 2025. Its current campus site has since been earmarked for a new MRT Green Line extension station serving Zhongli, and the city plans to build a larger replacement campus — roughly three times the current size — before demolishing the old one.

A Cold War history, encoded in a name.

🇻🇳

Futai Elementary's name is a direct, encoded link to one of the more unusual threads of Cold War-era Taiwan history: the 1953 evacuation of thousands of Chinese Nationalist soldiers and refugees from Phú Quốc Island off the coast of Vietnam, led by General Huang Jie. Many of those evacuees resettled in Zhongli, and the school was built specifically to educate their children — a piece of history most visitors would never guess from the name alone.
