A small school leading a big revival.
Fengren Elementary was founded in 1961 as an ordinary village school, but since around the 2024–2025 school year it has taken on a much bigger role: becoming Hualien County's first, and Taiwan's third nationwide, officially designated Hakka-culture experimental school. The school now pilots Mandarin-Hakka bilingual instruction in daily classes, has launched a weekend "Hakka school" for deeper immersion, and even started a Hakka scout troop — all working toward an ambitious goal of having 60% of its students able to speak Hakka.
What makes this school worth knowing.
Fengren pilots bilingual instruction that weaves Hakka directly into daily classes, not as a separate subject but as a living language of the classroom.
🏫 A Weekend Hakka School
Beyond regular classes, the school runs a weekend "Hakka school" (客家學堂) offering deeper cultural and language immersion for interested students.
🎪 A Hakka Scout Troop
The school has launched its own Hakka scout troop, blending cultural identity with the discipline and teamwork of scouting.
🎯 A Bold Language Goal
The school has set a target of having 60% of its students able to speak Hakka — an ambitious benchmark for language revival in a single generation.
Reviving the language of Fenglin's founders.
Fengren Elementary is a flagship example of Fenglin Township's Hakka identity — the town's Hakka farming heritage, carried by generations of settlers, is now being actively revived through this school's language immersion program. It stands as one of the clearest, most deliberate efforts anywhere in Hualien County to keep a heritage language alive in the next generation.
