From a Japanese-only school to an Indigenous-focus one.
Fengli Elementary's predecessor, "Taitung Public School's Ju Branch," was established in 1940 under Japanese rule, originally serving only Japanese children in what was then known as Xu Village. It became independent as "Ju National School" in April 1945, was renamed "Fengli National School" in 1947, and relocated to its present site in 1953. The school took its current name in 1968, and in 2004 was designated an Indigenous-focus school.

🪶 An Indigenous-Focus School Since 2004
Designated an Indigenous-focus school in 2004, Fengli Elementary today serves a very different community than the one it was built for under Japanese rule.
A history layered like the coastal plain itself.
The school's Japanese colonial-era origins as a Japanese-only school, later reborn as an Indigenous-focus school, trace the shifting ethnic layers of Taitung City's coastal plain across a century of change. See the Taitung county page for more on the region.
