A small mountain school with an Olympic story.
Dongyuan Junior High School was founded in August 1970 to serve the children of Dongyuan Village, deep in the mountain villages of Dongshan District. It remains a small rural school — typically six to ten classes and under 200 students — reflecting the gradual depopulation of Dongshan's coffee-growing highlands. The school serves a historically disadvantaged catchment area, with a large share of students coming from low-income or economically vulnerable mountain households.

The school serves a historically disadvantaged mountain catchment area, with many students from low-income or economically vulnerable households — a role central to its mission in the community.
In the highlands of Dongshan coffee country.
Perched in the coffee-growing hills of Dongshan District, the school is best known for producing Olympic weightlifter Fang Guan-ling — a rare bright spotlight on a small, remote mountain community. Dongshan's misty hillsides are famous across Taiwan for Dongshan coffee (東山咖啡), and the scenic Toucheng Longevity Bridge (頭橋長壽橋) forms a gateway into these coffee-growing highlands. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
