Dongyang Elementary began in July 1957 as the 'Xinrong Branch' of Xuejia Elementary School, becoming independent in 1961 as Tainan County Xuejia Township Dongyang Elementary School. A short-lived branch classroom in Wenhua Meihe was discontinued in 1972. In December 2011 the school was designated a 'free enrollment' school, letting students from outside its normal catchment zone attend.
東陽國小前身為學甲國小於民國46年（1957年）7月設立的「新榮分校」，民國50年（1961年）獨立設校為台南縣學甲鄉東陽國民小學。學校曾設有文化美和分校，於民國61年（1972年）裁撤。民國100年（2011年）12月起，學校被列為「自由入學」學校，開放學區外學生就讀。
