A school facing the Pacific, hands-on with tradition.

Dongqing Elementary serves Iranmeylek (Dongqing) village on Orchid Island, with a campus that sits directly on Dongqing Bay — the Pacific Ocean fills the view from the school's front gate. Nearly all students here are Tao (Yami) Indigenous, and the school has built its identity around a distinctive "canoe-building generational inheritance" program, in which children learn the traditional skills of constructing the Tao plank canoe, or tatala, directly from community elders.

🐟

Dongqing Elementary's canoe-building curriculum directly transmits the Tao (Yami) people's signature plank-canoe and flying-fish fishing tradition to the next generation. The Tao are Taiwan's only Indigenous people traditionally settled on an offshore island, with a language and material culture distinct from the fifteen Indigenous peoples of the main island.
