Classes that began inside a temple.

Donggang Elementary School was founded on November 11, 1898, as "Donggang Public School" (東港公學校) — 14 years before the Republic of China was even founded — making it one of the oldest schools in the entire region. Its original catchment area covered Donggang, Linbian, Liuqiu, and Xinyuan, an enormous span for a single school. In a detail that captures the deep intertwining of local education and temple culture, its very first classes were held inside Donglong Temple (東隆宮), Donggang's chief Wangye temple. Today, with over 125 years of continuous institutional history, the school remains a foundational presence in the town.

🎣

Donggang Town's identity centers on its historic fishing port, famous for bluefin tuna, and the triennial King Boat Burning Festival centered on Donglong Temple — the very temple where this school's first classes were held. Recognized as national important intangible cultural heritage in 2011, the festival remains at the heart of the town's Wangye temple traditions. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
