An award-winning campus built on flood-formed land.

Dingzhou Elementary was founded in March 1918 as the Ding-Xizhou branch of Xuejia Public School, becoming independent as Xizhou Public School in 1922. The school sits on land at the south bank of the Bazhang River that was formed by silt deposits from a major Kangxi-era flood in 1701. Its rebuilt 2021 campus, shaped like a double-tiered pigeon-racing loft merged with a watermelon motif, won the Kaohsiung Architects Association's '2020 Renhe Award' Outstanding Prize in the education category.

🍉

Dingzhou's award-winning rebuilt campus is a direct architectural tribute to the pigeon-loft racing and watermelon-farming traditions unique to this remote riverside corner of Xuejia's milkfish district — a rare case of local culture translated straight into a school's design. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
