Dazhi Elementary School began in 1948 as a satellite classroom of Dalong Elementary School ("大龍國校分教室"), becoming an independent school in 1953 as "Dazhi National School." It was built on the site of a former "farming cooperative meeting hall" (農事組合集會所), reflecting Dazhi's pre-development rural character. The school took its current name in 1968, with the nine-year compulsory education reform, and reached 71 years of continuous operation by 2019.
The school's own historical account is the origin story of the "Dazhi" place name itself: the neighborhood ("大直" = "big straight") is named for the long straight road running from Yuanshan through Mingshui Road to Bei'an Road — the area's only through-route before urbanization. An on-campus swimming pool was completed in 1985, and a student activity center followed in 1989.
大直國小於1948年（民國37年）以「大龍國校分教室」型態設立，1953年（民國42年）獨立設校，定名「大直國民學校」。校地前身為「農事組合集會所」，反映出大直開發前的農村面貌。學校於1968年因九年國教實施更為現名，至2019年（民國108年）已持續辦學71年。
學校的官方校史正是「大直」地名由來的第一手記錄：「大直」之名取自昔日從圓山經明水路直通北安路的一條筆直農路——這是都市化之前該地區唯一的聯外道路。校內游泳池於1985年（民國74年）完工，學生活動中心則於1989年（民國78年）落成。
