A school built on one doctor's generosity.
Dayou Elementary School owes its founding to Dr. Weng Dayou, a local physician and philanthropist who donated funds to build a school for the Shitoucuo community, matched by government construction funding — a rare case of an individually-endowed public school in Taiwan. The first preparatory meeting was held March 15, 1962, with approval following in April; a two-story campus building was completed in June 1963, and the school opened its doors on September 1, 1963 under founding principal Chen Dingqi. Today the school's curriculum includes Hakka language instruction, a "Dayou Food and Agriculture" education program, and environmental and traffic safety education initiatives.
