Daxin Elementary School

A Hakka-township village school closed in 2021-2022 after enrollment fell to about 30 students — one of seven Pingtung schools shuttered by rural depopulation, its campus now a community co-creation base.

A small village school, quietly closed.

Daxin Elementary served the families of Datong Village in Jiadong Township for generations, but like many small rural schools across Taiwan, it could not withstand the pressure of a falling birthrate. By the time of its closure, enrollment had dropped to only about 30 students. The school was formally merged and closed (裁併校) during the 2021–2022 academic year, part of a broader wave of small-school closures across Pingtung County — local reporting notes that the county closed seven schools over a four-year span as rural communities lost young families to the cities. Rather than sitting empty, the former campus was given new life in 2025 as the "大新全齡共創基地" (Daxin All-Ages Co-Creation Base), a community space now hosting a café, co-creation classrooms, and fitness facilities. We keep this page as a historical record of a school that once anchored its village's education, and whose site now continues to serve the community in a new form.

📉 A Small School Facing a National Trend

Enrollment at Daxin had fallen to just about 30 students by the time of its closure, a fate shared by small schools across rural Taiwan.

🏘️ One of Seven Pingtung Closures

Daxin's 2021–2022 closure was part of a wider wave — Pingtung County closed seven schools over four years as rural depopulation accelerated.

☕ Reborn as a Co-Creation Base

In 2025, the former campus was repurposed as the "Daxin All-Ages Co-Creation Base," now home to a café, co-creation classrooms, and fitness facilities.

🕊️ A Dignified Ending, Not a Disappearance

Rather than standing empty, Daxin's campus continues to serve its village community — just in a new form, as a gathering place for all ages.

Local Culture ·

A marker of rural Pingtung's demographic decline.

🏡

Daxin Elementary sat within Jiadong Township (佳冬鄉), a historic Hakka farming community known for the Xiao family mansion and its long tradition of salt-pond and fish-farming aquaculture. The closure and adaptive reuse of this village school illustrates rural Pingtung's demographic decline as younger families move toward cities — but its former campus now serves the local Jiadong community in a new way, as a multipurpose gathering space rather than a functioning school. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
