A school that began inside a temple.
Dawan Elementary was founded in April 1918 as a branch of Puchiangtou (埔姜頭) Public School, serving the Dawan and Taizimiao areas. Its original campus was borrowed space inside the Dawan Guanghu Temple (大灣廣護宮) — a working example of how temples served as makeshift schoolhouses during the Japanese colonial era. The school became fully independent in April 1921, when Puchiangtou Public School was renamed Yongkang Public School and its Dawan branch was spun off. Today the school holds AA-level web accessibility certification.

Temples as the first schoolhouses.
The temple-as-schoolhouse origin at Guanghu Temple is a direct link to the folk-religion infrastructure that anchored community life in Yongkang's rural villages before formal school buildings existed. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
