From an all-girls school to a century of coeducation.
Datong Elementary School was established on April 1, 1917, as “Chiayi Girls Public School” (嘉義女子公學校), originally an all-girls institution. It was renamed “Shirakawa Public School” (白川公學校) in 1933 and “Shirakawa National School” (白川國民學校) in 1941. The school began accepting male students in 1930, becoming coeducational, and took its current name, “Datong,” in 1946. As one of Chiayi's oldest schools, its transformation from a girls' school to a coeducational institution mirrors the city's broader social changes across a century.
