Gushan Elementary School began in 1965 as the Gushan branch class of Xipu National School (溪埔國民學校姑山分班), becoming fully independent in 1981 as Kaohsiung County's Gushan Elementary School. Since independence, its campus has grown from 0.3 to 0.9 hectares. The school takes its name from Gushan ("Aunt Mountain"), a local hill in the Dashu foothills.
姑山國小始於1965年（民國54年），最初為「溪埔國民學校姑山分班」，1981年（民國70年）正式獨立設校，改制為高雄縣姑山國民小學。獨立設校後，校地面積由0.3公頃擴增至0.9公頃。校名源自大樹丘陵地帶的姑山（「姑姑的山」）。
