A school established, and re-established, five times over.

Dashe Elementary School has one of the most convoluted institutional histories among the district's schools. It began in 1920 as a branch classroom of Shanzhiding (山仔頂) Public School, was folded into Shanshang Public School in 1925, re-established as a branch in 1938, and became “Dashe National School” in 1941. A 1947 boundary change briefly folded it into Xinshi Township, abolishing it as an independent school, before it was re-established as a branch of Xinshi Elementary School in August 1949 and finally became fully independent on August 1, 1952. It took its present name, Tainan City Xinshi District Dashe Elementary School, on December 25, 2010, after the Tainan county-city merger. The village name “Dashe” (大社, “great settlement”) reflects the area's origin as a significant indigenous settlement site before Han development.

Local Culture ·

A place name that predates Han settlement.

🪶

The place name “Dashe” itself points to the area's pre-Han indigenous settlement history in the Xinshi-Shanshang corridor, part of the broader Siraya cultural landscape of the Zengwen River basin that also shapes neighboring Danei and Xinshi. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
