Dacheng Elementary School was founded in 1960. Facing enrollment as low as about 20 students, the school reinvented itself as Taiwan's first arts experimental elementary school (全台第一所藝術實驗小學) and Pingtung County's third privately-managed public school (公辦民營), reversing a trend toward closure. It now partners with Taipei National University of the Arts and Cloud Gate Dance Theatre for arts resources and curriculum, drawing national media attention for how a tiny rural school gained access to major Taipei-based cultural institutions.
