國立嘉義女子高級中學創校於民國11年（1922年）4月1日，前身為日治時期的「臺南州立嘉義高等女學校」，是嘉義地區歷史最悠久的女子學校。戰後改為省立學校，並於民國89年（2000年）改制為國立高中。2025年起首度招收男學生，於特定學程中招收30名男學生，寫下學校歷史新頁。
