From a one-class branch to an independent school.

Shakeng Elementary began in September 1955 as a single-class branch of nearby Yiren Elementary School, expanding to three classes by 1957. It was approved as an independent school in August 1960, with a formal independence ceremony held in October 1963, and took its current name in 1968 under the nine-year compulsory education reform. Designated a remote-area school, Shakeng maintains a campus tree information platform, accessibility maps for campus safety, and detailed records of its past principals and school history.

🏘️

Shakeng is one of the small remote mountain hamlets scattered through Zhuqi's interior — communities that historically grew tea and farmed the foothills on the approach to Alishan. Shakeng Elementary represents this pattern of tiny, tightly-knit rural schools. See the Chiayi county page for more on the region.
