Dongshi Junior High School's lineage traces back to 1912, when it began as a branch of Chiayi Elementary School under Japanese rule, going independent in 1917 and being renamed several times through the 1920s. After Taiwan's retrocession, it reorganized in 1946 as Dongshi Junior Middle School, and became Dongshi Junior High School in 1968 when its senior-high division separated to form what is now National Dongshi Senior High School. Since 1972 the school has enrolled boys only, with the paired Puzi Junior High School enrolling girls — a historical division from that 1968 reorganization.
東石國中的校史可追溯至1912年，最初為嘉義公學校的分校，1917年獨立設校，並於1920年代歷經數次更名。台灣光復後，於民國35年（1946年）改制為東石初級中學，民國57年（1968年）高中部分出、成立今日的國立東石高級中學後，改稱東石國民中學。自民國61年（1972年）起，本校僅招收男學生，與招收女學生的朴子國中並列，此為1968年改制留下的歷史分工。
