A missionary heritage stretching back to 1885.
Chang Jung Christian University (CJCU) was founded in 1993 as a private Presbyterian research university, but its institutional lineage runs much deeper: it traces back to Chang Jung Senior High School, founded around 1885 by Presbyterian missionaries as one of Taiwan's first Western-style schools, part of the wave of Presbyterian mission education that made Tainan the historic center of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. The name "Chang Jung" (長榮) translates roughly as "everlasting glory." The high school's missionary teachers included Edward Band, credited by some accounts with helping introduce association football to Taiwan in the early 20th century.
