From a temple branch school to an A-class bilingual campus.
Chonghe Elementary School was founded in April 1919 as a branch of Guanmiao Public School, originally housed inside Shenkeng Temple. It was renamed and relocated several times before becoming an independent school in 1942 as "Guedong National School," taking its current name, Chonghe, in 1953. The school is designated an "A-class" bilingual-education school, devoting roughly a third of its weekly class time to English instruction, supplemented by a mobile "English activity vehicle" that brings interactive lessons to students. It is also a designated Hakka-language feature school, running a taiko drumming team, taichi, and a track-and-field program. In 1965, Chonghe established its own branch school in Budai Village, which became independent in 1976 as Wenhe Elementary School.

🌿 Mother School to Wenhe
Chonghe's own 1965 branch campus in Budai Village became independent in 1976 as Wenhe Elementary — now Tainan's pioneering mixed-age experimental school.
A school that split to serve scattered hamlets.
Chonghe's own history of branching off village schools — including what became Wenhe Elementary — mirrors the scattered hamlet settlement pattern typical of Guanmiao's farming communities, where hilly terrain and dispersed villages long required local branch classrooms before children could reach a central school. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
