A school born inside a temple.
Chikan Elementary was founded in 1900 as "Da Chikan Public School," and since no schoolhouse existed yet, its very first classes were held inside the local Shuixian Temple, dedicated to a folk sea-god. In 1909 it was formally reorganized as Baisha Island Public School through the merger of three schools, and it was renamed Chikan Public School in 1922 before becoming "Chikan National Elementary School" in 1968. Its first principal was a Japanese administrator; its first ROC-era principal after 1945 was Wu Shuang-shi. Over its long history, the school spawned several other institutions as branches — including the schools that later became independent on Niaoyu and Jibei islands.
