The elder school of the Xiyu peninsula.
Chidong Elementary was founded on February 17, 1903, under Japanese rule — the fourth school established in all of Penghu, making it one of the county's oldest. Over the following decades it set up branch classrooms in Neian (1919) and the Zhugaowan/Zhuwan area (1920), and several of those branches went on to become independent schools of their own, including Chima (1963) and Dachi (1970). Renamed "Chidong National Elementary School" in 1968, it today runs six elementary classes plus a kindergarten class and a special-education class, serving the villages of Chidong, Chisi, and Erkan. Since 2024, it has also taken on the former Zhuwan Elementary as a branch campus following that school's closure.

A century of Xiyu's settlement history.
As one of the oldest schools on the Xiyu peninsula, Chidong Elementary's history is woven into the founding of several other village schools across this fishing and farming community — a living record of how Penghu's scattered Minnan settlements built local education village by village. See the Penghu county page for more on the region.
