Chiayi Junior High School traces its origin to 1933, when the Chiayi Girls' Technical Institute was established after Chiayi Elementary School's girls' continuing-education program was discontinued. The school relocated to its present campus at Shanzaiding in 1939, and operated as a girls-only institution through several name changes before becoming coeducational around 1950. It became a municipal junior high in 1982, when Chiayi City was upgraded to provincial-city status.
嘉義國中源起於1933年（昭和8年）設立的嘉義女子技藝講習所，係因嘉義公學校女子繼續科停辦而設。民國28年（1939年），該校遷至現址山仔頂。歷經數次更名，原為女校，約於民國39年（1950年）改為男女合校。民國71年（1982年）嘉義市升格為省轄市後，改隸市立國中。
