Founded by the family behind Formosa Plastics.
Chang Gung University was founded in April 1987 as Chang Gung Medical College by brothers Wang Yung-ching and Wang Yung-tsai, founders of Formosa Plastics Group. They named the school after their father, Wang Chang-gung — the same namesake as the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital system the brothers had earlier established in his memory. In 1993 the school added Colleges of Engineering and Management alongside Medicine and was renamed Chang Gung College of Medicine and Technology. It was approved by Taiwan's Ministry of Education to become Chang Gung University in August 1997.
長庚大學於1987年4月由台塑集團創辦人王永慶、王永在昆仲創立，初名「長庚醫學院」，校名取自其父王長庚——與兄弟倆早年為紀念父親所創辦的長庚紀念醫院體系同名。1993年增設工學院與管理學院，與醫學院並列，更名為「長庚醫學暨工程學院」；1997年8月經教育部核准改制為長庚大學。
