A century-old campus under heritage camphor trees.
Xinzhuang Elementary School was founded in 1923 and celebrated its centennial, having begun as a branch school of Caotun Elementary during the Japanese colonial era before becoming independent. The campus preserves a historic assembly hall rebuilt in 1964 in its original Japanese-era design, along with a protected Japanese-era teacher's dormitory. Two camphor trees over a century old still stand on campus, formally protected as heritage trees.

What makes this school worth knowing.
🏛️ A Rebuilt Japanese-Era Assembly Hall
日治風格禮堂重建
Xinzhuang preserves a historic assembly hall, rebuilt in 1964 in its original Japanese-era design — a rare architectural link to the school's colonial-era beginnings.
🏠 A Protected Teacher's Dormitory
受保護日式宿舍
The campus includes a protected Japanese-era teacher's dormitory, one of the more intact examples of colonial-period school architecture in the township.
🌳 Two Century-Old Camphor Trees
百年樟樹受保護
Two camphor trees more than a century old still stand on the Xinzhuang campus, formally protected as heritage trees and a living link to the school's founding era.
A century of timber, in trees and buildings alike.
With buildings and camphor trees dating back over a century, Xinzhuang Elementary reflects Caotun's deep roots in timber and woodcraft — the same natural-wood heritage that shaped the town's furniture-making industry. See the Nantou county page for more on the region.
