Born from disaster relief, rebuilt through disaster relief.

Qiaoguang Elementary School was built in 1960 with donations from overseas Chinese communities responding to the severe 1959 "8-7 Flood" (八七水災) — a disaster that devastated much of central Taiwan. The school's name, Qiaoguang ("Overseas Light"), commemorates this origin. It was formally renamed an elementary school in 1968. Its first principal, Xu Xin-zhi, was a rare female principal for her era. Decades later, the campus was rebuilt again after the 1999 921 earthquake, this time with support from the Kaohsiung County government and the Tzu Chi Foundation.

After the 1999 921 earthquake damaged the campus, Qiaoguang was rebuilt with support from the Kaohsiung County government and the Tzu Chi Foundation — a second act of outside solidarity in the school's history.
