Rebuilt with charity, served by a book van.
Pingling Elementary School was founded in 1954 and sits at the foot of Jiujiu Peak (九九峰) in eastern Caotun Township, a scenic landmark known for its distinctive eroded hillsides. The school was severely damaged in the 1999 921 earthquake and was subsequently rebuilt with support from the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist charity foundation. As a remote and under-resourced school, Pingling is served by the "Cloud and Water" (雲水) mobile book van, which brings reading materials directly to students who might otherwise have limited access.

Buddhist charity meets a woodworking town.
Rebuilt after the 921 earthquake with Fo Guang Shan's help, Pingling Elementary is a living example of how Nantou communities — even in a woodworking town like Caotun — drew on Buddhist and civic charity to recover from the 1999 disaster. See the Nantou county page for more on the region.
