A small school named for a rare migratory bird.
Budai Junior High School was founded in the autumn of 1957 as "Budai Junior Middle School," and was reorganized in 1968 into a junior high under Taiwan's nine-year compulsory education system. Today it is a very small, remote coastal school — just 59 students across six regular classes and one resource class — but an active one, with students competing in photography, reading-promotion, AI-creation, and language-arts contests, alongside programs in technical arts, bilingual education, gifted education, and environmental education.

🦢 The Black-Faced Spoonbill Motto
The school motto "鶯飛魚躍 黑琵布中" directly references the black-faced spoonbill (黑面琵鷺), a globally rare migratory bird that winters in Budai's coastal wetlands, anchoring the school's identity in local ecology.
📷 Creative & Competitive Spirit
Despite its small size, the school is active in photography, reading-promotion talent contests, AI-creation competitions, and language-arts events, giving students in a remote area a wide creative outlet.
🎨 Technical Arts & Gifted Education
The school offers technical arts education alongside gifted-education tracks, broadening the options available to students at a small rural junior high.
🌱 Environmental & Bilingual Focus
Environmental education and bilingual education initiatives are both part of the curriculum, reflecting the school's coastal setting and Taiwan's push toward bilingual schooling.
Home to the black-faced spoonbill.
The school's motto, "鶯飛魚躍 黑琵布中," invokes the black-faced spoonbill that winters in Budai's coastal wetlands, tying the campus identity directly to the town's famous tidal flats and migratory bird habitat — one of the reasons Budai draws birdwatchers from across Taiwan. See the Chiayi county page for more on the region.
