Built by artillery troops, opened under fire.
Bocun Elementary was directly ordered built in 1957 by Kinmen Defense Commander General Hu Lien, at Liaoluo Bay. Construction began on January 4, 1958, led by artillery units, was completed that April, and the school was inaugurated on May 17, 1958, in a ceremony jointly presided over by four generals. It was named after then-Artillery Command commander Hao Bocun, who later became ROC Premier and Chief of the General Staff. The school's opening was delayed later that year by the fierce August 23 Artillery Bombardment, and classes could only begin once the shelling eased in 1959. When General Hao Bocun died in 2020 at age 101, students and staff held a memorial service in his honor.

Kinmen's most direct military-history school.
Bocun is perhaps the most direct military-history school on Kinmen — literally built by artillery troops during active fortification of the island and named for a commander who became a national ROC leader, with its opening itself delayed by the 823 Artillery Bombardment. See the Kinmen county page for more on the region.
