Over a century under an old banyan tree.

Baoxi Elementary opened in 1915 as a branch of Guandimiao Public School serving the Mazu Temple community, during the Japanese colonial era. It was renamed "Mazu Temple Public School" in 1920, "Mazu Temple National School" in 1941, and took its current name, "Baoxi National Elementary School," in 1968. The campus is locally famous for a century-old banyan tree, cited in newspaper coverage of Taiwan's most memorable schoolyard corners, and in January 2018 the school celebrated its 103rd anniversary with the dedication of a new school building.

A living memory of pre-HSR Guiren.

🌳

As one of Guiren's oldest schools, Baoxi Elementary's century-plus history and its landmark old banyan tree reflect the district's pre-HSR agricultural village character — a quiet counterpoint to the transit-hub growth transforming much of Guiren since the mid-2000s. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
