Rebuilding a school, and a community, together.
Banahua Tribal School has a complex history rooted in disaster recovery. It began as Namasia's Minzu Elementary School (那瑪夏民族國小); after Typhoon Morakot struck in 2009, the school operated for two and a half years from temporary quarters in Cishan before its community relocated to a new site in Shanlin District, where it reopened as Minzu Da'ai Elementary School (民族大愛國小). In 2017 it became an Indigenous-focus experimental school, and in 2019 it was restructured into a single combined elementary-and-junior-high institution serving roughly 122 students. Its principal, known by the Bunun name Along, has developed a curriculum centered on millet culture and Bunun seasonal ceremonies.

A name carrying the community's own story.
According to the school's own account, the name "巴楠" (Banahua) derives from the Bunun word "padan," referring to a resilient silvergrass — said by the school to symbolize the Bunun community's resilience in rebuilding after disaster. This is presented here as the school's own oral tradition, not as verified etymology. See the Kaohsiung County/City page for more on the region.
