Born in a temple, built by neighbors.
Bali Elementary's story began in 1946, when it opened as a branch classroom of Zhongli Elementary's Zhiba campus, initially holding classes inside the local Qiwen Temple (啟文宮). In 1950, it was renamed the Xinming Elementary Zhibali Branch. In 1952, five local residents led by Liu Jiamei donated the land for a permanent campus free of charge; the first classroom building went up in 1955, and the school became fully independent in 1956. Since independence, twelve principals have led the school, which has celebrated its 60th anniversary.
What makes this school worth knowing.
🛕 Born Inside a Temple
廟宇裡的第一堂課
Bali Elementary's earliest classes were held inside the local Qiwen Temple (啟文宮), before the school had any campus of its own — a grassroots beginning shared by few other schools in the district.
🎁 Land Donated by Five Neighbors
五位居民捐地建校
In 1952, five local residents led by Liu Jiamei donated the land for Bali's permanent campus free of charge, a community-funded origin story rather than a top-down government project.
👨🏫 Twelve Principals and Counting
歷任十二位校長
Since becoming independent in 1956, Bali Elementary has been led by twelve principals, a lineage the school marked with its 60th-anniversary celebration.
A grassroots school-building story.
Bali Elementary's founding — a temple classroom followed by free land donated by local residents — is a textbook example of how Zhongli's outlying rural hamlets built their own schools through community initiative rather than top-down government construction. It's a quieter, more grassroots counterpart to the larger, government-driven school-building projects seen elsewhere in the district.
