Puzi City is the second-largest urban center in Chiayi County after Taibao, serving as the commercial and cultural hub of the county's western half. Situated on the south bank of the Puzi River (朴子溪), the city grew from a trading port in the Qing Dynasty, when boats carried goods between the coastal fishing villages and the inland agricultural communities. The historic old street (老街) and former market district preserve the architectural character of this mercantile past.
The city's spiritual center is Peitian Temple (配天宮), one of Taiwan's most important Mazu temples, which claims to be the "mother temple" (祖廟) of hundreds of Mazu branches across Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Puzi has also been a center for traditional arts — the River Art Village (朴子溪藝術村) has revitalized abandoned riverside warehouses into studios, galleries, and performance spaces for artists and craftspeople. The combination of religious heritage, river scenery, and artisan culture makes Puzi one of Chiayi County's most culturally rich destinations.
