Lucao Township takes its name from the Chinese words for "deer" (鹿, lù) and "grass" (草, cǎo) — a direct reference to the open grasslands that once supported large herds of Taiwan sambar deer and Formosan sika deer before the island's agricultural transformation. Today the township presents a quiet face of rice paddies, garlic fields, and small farming communities, but its name preserves the ecological memory of a wilder time.
The township contains the former Lujiao Sugar Factory (鹿草糖廠), one of the Taiwan Sugar Corporation's historic production facilities. Though the refinery itself no longer operates, its grounds have become a point of historical interest, and the surrounding farmland still produces sugarcane for specialty markets. Lucao is also known for its garlic production — together with neighboring Liujiao, it forms part of the "Chiayi garlic belt" that supplies a significant portion of Taiwan's total garlic crop.
