Dapu Township is the most remote and least populated township in Chiayi County, tucked deep into the southern reaches of the Central Mountain Range along the border with Tainan City. Its defining geographical feature is the Zengwen Reservoir (曾文水庫) — Taiwan's largest reservoir by capacity, built between 1967 and 1973, which inundated the original Dapu township center and displaced entire villages. The reservoir now provides drinking water for over 1.5 million people across Tainan and southern Chiayi County.
The township's remaining land is predominantly subtropical and tropical forest, including sections of Yushan National Park and protected wildlife corridors. The area is home to rare and endangered species including the Formosan black bear, sambar deer, Taiwan blue magpie, and mikado pheasant — Taiwan's national bird. Dapu has the darkest night skies in Chiayi County, making it an increasingly popular stargazing destination.
