Alishan Township is the crown jewel of Chiayi County, rising from subtropical valleys to alpine peaks that pierce a permanent sea of clouds. At its heart lies Alishan National Scenic Area, a 14,000-hectare reserve that draws over two million visitors annually. The famous Alishan Forest Railway — one of only three mountain railways in the world — winds 72 km from Chiayi City up to Zhushan at 2,451 meters, a route listed as a world engineering heritage candidate.
The township is also home to the Tsou (鄒族) indigenous people, who have inhabited these mountains for over 400 years. Their villages, language, millet-harvest festivals, and oral traditions form a living cultural heritage. Every February and March, rows of yoshino cherry trees explode into pink bloom along the mountain trails — a sight that has made Alishan's cherry blossom festival one of the most celebrated in all of Asia.

Sunrise at Zhushan Peak
祝山觀日出
Zhushan Station, at 2,451 m, is the highest point on the Alishan Forest Railway. Visitors board a special early-morning train in darkness to reach the summit just before dawn, where the sun erupts over a billowing sea of clouds — one of Taiwan's most iconic natural moments.

Alishan Forest Railway

Built in 1906 under Japanese rule, the Alishan Forest Railway climbs 2,216 meters using switchbacks, spirals, and 50 tunnels to navigate the rugged terrain. It is one of only three mountain railways in the world and remains an operating heritage line transporting both tourists and local residents.

Cherry Blossom Festival

Each February and March, over 20,000 yoshino cherry trees burst into bloom across Alishan's hiking trails and slopes. The altitude creates a slightly later and longer bloom than low-elevation sakura, with pink blossoms against a backdrop of blue mountain ridges and white mist.
每年二至三月，超過兩萬棵吉野櫻在阿里山的步道和山坡上盛開。高海拔使花期比平地更晚且更長，粉色花海映著連綿山脈與白色雲霧，景色壯麗無比。
Tsou Indigenous Culture
鄒族文化
The Tsou people (鄒族) have lived in the Alishan mountains for centuries. Their tribal villages in Dabang and Tefuye preserve traditional longhouses, millet cultivation, and the sacred Mayasvi warrior ceremony. Visitors can experience Tsou music, cuisine, and crafts through cultural tours.
